In the UK Central Government's expenditure on sport and recreation is £1.3 billion employing around 500,000 people within the sector. However, sport and recreation impacts on the UK improving the health and well being of all sections of society from reducing health problems to developing social cohesion.

This programme is aimed at those students who wish to pursue a career in management in this fast developing area.

Entry requirements

For 2017 entry onwards: applicants require 96 UCAS points at A Level or Level 3 equivalent or an Access to HE Diploma. Additionally, applicants will be expected to have a minimum grade C in GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent). In all instances applicants will be required to attend for an interview.

In line with the widening participation brief, the Institute encourages applications from those who lack formal academic qualifications. All such applicants will be set a 1,500 word and a judgement made taking into account their academic potential and relevant experience.

What Next

Once completed, students may have the opportunity to enrol on to the BA Tourism & Business Management Top Up (validated by University of Hull) or you may wish to go straight into employment at management level within the sport and recreation industries.

Programme Benefits

Upon successful completion of this degree, graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to pursue a new career, or advance an existing one within the sport and recreation management industry. Some graduates will progress on to a final year of study in order to complete a BA degree in this discipline. Graduates will be able to pursue a wide range of roles within the sport and recreation management sector. All of these roles can be either deployed nationally or internationally. Graduates will also be able to seek senior positions within the generic sport and recreation industry.


Learning & Teaching Methods

Methods of learning and teaching are designed to support students in becoming active members of a learning community. Students will be expected to work together in an informal environment as well as in formal classes where a culture of dignity, courtesy and mutual respect with staff and their peers is essential. A variety of methods will be used such as lectures, seminars and workshops together with student-led presentations and self-directed learning tasks. Integrating a work-based or placement opportunity, students will be visited in the workplace by a member of Institute staff to ensure a positive partnership between the employer mentor and to monitor that learning in the workplace is effective. Workplace learning is designed to support the development of an employable graduate equipped with the attributes, skills and knowledge to progress within a global market.
