The HND course focuses on developing knowledge and understanding of specific and optional units covered at Level 4 HNC. The course utilises both the college facilities and external partnerships to help create a unique package that covers a wide range of Sport and Exercise career pathways.

If you are interested in anatomy and physiology, learners will get the opportunity to combine theoretical and applied learning contexts to allow you to examine traditional principles of biomechanics through a practical learning environment. You will discover how to use essential practical techniques in sports biomechanics through investigating different sporting activities first hand, which will give you a greater understanding of the key mechanical principles in sport performance.

Sometimes it is difficult to conduct fitness tests due to lack of facilities and equipment. You will get the opportunity to explore field-based fitness tests, enabling you to have a range of tests for different situations. Learners will gain the opportunity to practically investigate these tests and interpret the results against normative values.Testing can also help you to analyse the performance demands of selected sport including the skills, techniques, physical fitness requirements, skill related requirements and psychological requirements. Learners will get the chance to formally assess the sports performance of an individual, identifying appropriate tests and carry out these tests on the individual to analyse their sports performance. Feedback to individuals will help improve performanceRegarding the use of sports psychology in sport, learners will get the opportunity to understand the purpose of psychological skills training (PST) and the roles psychological skills can play.
Learners will explore techniques used to control arousal levels and the associated issues of anxiety and stress, including relaxation and imagery techniques used to lower arousal levels and psyching up techniques to raise arousal levels. Within competitive sport, concentration and maintaining an appropriate attentional focus is essential for optimal performance.Learners will get the chance to employ techniques and exercises for maintaining and improving concentrationIn relation to the theoretical aspects of the course, through our extensive local partnerships, learners will also get the chance to complete a work experience placement to help in developing work based skills and put theory into practice.

Equality & Diversity

All of our activities in relation to teaching, safeguarding, training, recruitment, retention and progression are core business areas where we must be mindful of the diverse needs of those we work with. Although the law no longer requires public sector organisations to produce equality schemes, the Grimsby Institute Group has produced an Equality Statement, which is more than mere words, but a statement of our intent.

This statement underpinned by declarations from the leaders of the Grimsby Institute Group include many actions we believe will proactively eliminate all forms of discrimination where they exist and prevent them from occurring in the first instance.

Equality Intent turning into equality action is the future ethos and philosophy of the Grimsby Institute Group and as the principal lead for Equality, Diversity Inclusion & Human Rights the Grimsby Institute Group will demonstrate this commitment in all that they do.
